These are comments heard so often and this is what the learning of positive and negative in drawing overcomes.
Here's another great video on understanding positive and negative. Use tracing paper. This is so simple but best yet, it makes being able to draw a snap! Don't let your child be intimidated with friend's criticism on this. Just keep the use of tracing paper quiet, and It won't be long until your student will be looking at the lines around the object he wishes to draw, without the use of the paper.
With children I use tracing paper but this can work for anyone. Simply set the tracing paper over what pictures you wish to draw. Outline the main object. This object becomes your positive space and you simply draw around the object without filling in details inside the positive space. But, look at the video. What's not to understand.
