    Electric Scotland News

The continued war on tariffs continues to wreck havoc on the global system.

I can understand the desire of Trump to make America Great Again and obviously he needs to find ways to earn more and also to not spend as much so that America can reduce her great debt,

However in the process I think he's damaging America as he's lost the trust of his allies and I don't think that can ever be regained.

From a Canadian perspective that trust has now gone and is leading the country to seek other trading partners around the world. This means that America has lost a good friend with secure energy and minerals that America needs and to be honest didn't pay much for.

Let's be honest about this. America needs Canada's oil as American refineries can't process your own oil as they were built to process the heavier oil that Canada supplies.

However this has been a wake up call for Canada and while they are in election mode all political parties now agree the need to build pipelines and dig for minerals. They also agree with needing to build up our defences and to protect the Arctic. They also agree on removing inter Provincial regulations.

Likewise Europe now sees the need to spend lots more on defence so Trump has now been able to save lots of money on NATO expenditure. However, due to the trust issue, both Canada and Portugal are looking to abort deals to purchase fighter aircraft from America. Other major airlines around the world are now looking to buy from Airbus instead of Boeing. Also due to the China trade war anyone looking to manufacture in America has to take account of the price they need to pay to purchase steel and aluminum and also the possibility of shortages of rare earth minerals.

It takes 10 years to build an Aluminum plant and it needs a lot of energy to process it which America doesn't actually have despite Trump saying he doesn't need energy from Canada.

In today's world we need friends to work with and to be frank this trade war in my opinion means that America won't have any friends left and that's why Trump wants to make Canada the 51st state and to take over Greenland. In this way America wouldn't need any friends.

However, China has made major progress in its semi-conductor business, and thus looks to be a leader on this front and all the world will thus be looking for them to provide them with the products that America can't supply and thus the world could move ahead leaving America behind.

Lots to digest here and who knows how it will all end.

I also note the fall and recovery and fall of the stock markets but the bond markets are not reacting in the same way. Might the BRICS nations take over from the Dollar?

Scottish News from this weeks newspapers

I am partly doing this to build an archive of modern news from and about Scotland and world news stories that can affect Scotland and as all the newsletters are archived and also indexed on search engines it becomes a good resource. I might also add that in a number of newspapers you will find many comments which can be just as interesting as the news story itself and of course you can also add your own comments if you wish which I do myself from time to time.

Here is what caught my eye this week...

The world keeps running out of helium
There is now a race to prepare for the next shortage. Our lives are surprisingly dependent upon this extremely light and unreactive gas, yet supplies of it are remarkably fragile. Canada has some 20% of the worlds helium.

Donald Trump Tariffs have changed the entire world but instead of shifting power to the US, Trump is shifting other countries closer together. China and Canada have a plan to avoid Trump Tariffs and in today's video I travel to Kingston, Ontario to tell the story of how a Chinese company saw an opportunity in Canada and together built North America's largest dairy factory! This is the story of Canada Royal Milk and how countries are working together to avoid tariffs.

    Story

    Highland Military Dress

A Short Historical Review by Captain I. H. MacKay Scobie, The Seaforth Highlanders, FSAScot

The above title embraces a subject which affords almost limitless scope for research work to the military antiquarian and artist may be included the collecting of old military prints and relics, in themselves a source of great fascination as well as invaluable assistance to the study of the subject. The evolution of our Highland military dress is, one, however, which has, hitherto, not been nearly sufficiently appreciated or generally understood in its many and varied aspects, hence the surprising ignorance so often displayed on the matter!

The lack of a national military museum, State-aided if possible, such as France, in the shape of "Les Invalides," and other countries possess, is a very real drawback to our national life, and serves to accentuate what I have just stated above. The real aim of the Edinburgh Castle War Memorial Scheme, about which there has been so much discussion recently, is, I believe, to provide for such a museum in Scotland, where relics of the old Scots army and of Scottish regiments, from the earliest time to the present day, may be collected and there find a permanent abode. If this be so, such a scheme is surly deserving of our utmost encouragement and assistance.

With this preamble I will now proceed to the subject in hand.

An interesting account with some black and white pictures which I've posted as a pdf file which you can read at:
    https://electricscotland.com/history...itarydress.pdf
