Perthshire Advertiser....... Feb 4 2012
The Princess Royal returned to the church where her daughter was married to see two army battalions lay up their Colours.
The old Colours of the Royal Scots Borderers, 1st Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland and 52nd Lowland, 6th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland, were laid up in a joint ceremony at Canongate Kirk on Edinburgh's Royal Mile.
The Princess Royal, who is Royal Colonel of both battalions, attended the event which was led by Reverend Neil Gardner, who conducted her daughter Zara's marriage ceremony last July.
Each infantry battalion has two Colours, The Queen's Colour and The Regimental Colour, both of which bear battle honours.
The battalions have laid down their old Colours after their names changed following the creation of The Royal Regiment of Scotland in March 2006.
The Queen, Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal Regiment of Scotland, presented them with new Colours in a ceremony at Holyrood Park on July 2, 2011.
The old Colours will remain hanging in the church where many are on display as it is the kirk for Edinburgh Castle.
Colours acted as a rallying point on the battlefield and marked the location of the commander,
They are never purposely destroyed and are stored in museums, religious buildings and other significant places.
The other five battalions of the Royal Regiment of Scotland will lay up their Colours in future ceremonies.
