There was no reason to wait for "New" aircraft, the Harriers they sold at bargain basement prices to the US would have filled the gap till something worthwhile was produced. Certainly the F35 "Lemon" the US is attempting to produce looks like a very,very long way off, meanwhile the Harriers are serving a useful role for other forces...............I wonder who received the "Brown Envelope" full of "Readies" under the table to facilitate THAT transaction.
