    Hey,
Just found out yesterday that my husband has at least three skin cancer spots. I am not sure exactly how to express my feelings.... He has always taken such great care of his family and especially me. I CAN't live without him. Just wondering if anyone else knows anything about it beside what I have read.

    Re: Skin Cancer

there are many forms of skin cancer with many outcomes. The damage is usually done long before the cancer shows up. A lot of baby boomers are paying for the "go outside and play" attitudes of the 1950s and 1960s. As far as things go, just have him get into the habit of examining himself in a mirror on a regular basis. You may need to help as much as decorum allows. Look for spots that darken over time or have irregular shapes. Not all skin cancers are malignant so don't get into a panic when either one of you spots something. He might schedule more frequent outpatient appointments. A lot of light complexioned adults develop ugly looking skin thickenings called keratosis. They are usually not malignant and can be removed by freezing in an outpatient setting.

Diane, you didn't say whether or not your husband had the skin cancer spots removed. Did he? Many years ago, I had something on my left temple, on my face, which was "pearl-like", and went to a dermatologist clinic at the hospital. He used the treatment, of first taking a sample, to send to the lab for analysis, then using cryogenics, or nitrogen to freeze/burn it off. It was called actinic keratosis. Nothing else came of that. At present, I have on right forearm, something "pearl-like", which I think is actinic keratosis, which next week will have taken off, by another dermatologist. As a nurse, I have assisted in doing the same treatments on patients. My step-mother who is 90 now, has had several, & I mean several skin-cancers, taken off her face, & my father had some as well, & lived to be nearly 91. (didn't die of cancer)

In nursing school, we were taught that skin ca might start as "pearl-like" bumps, and the dermatologist explained to me that the actinic keratosis was a precursor to skin ca. Hope this helps. Tom was right in watching "moles" for changes, as above. It is also true, that these bumps were likely caused by sun exposure when we were much younger. Luckily, I couldn't stand as a teen, to lie out & tan in the sun, as it made me feel ill. Joan

        Re: Skin Cancer

I wouldn't worry too much about it Diane. It's very common in Australia and heaps of people have skin cancers removed every year. As long as you keep getting it checked regularly and the cancers removed, it's extremely unlikely to become life threatening.

          Hey,
Thanks for your responses. It calmed me down as I had a meltdown like I am prone to do alot as you may well know. Everyone is so right. Tom, I will help examine him all over. ;) Joan, he has Actinic Keratosis which were frozen off at his visit. He also has Squamous Cell Cancer and Basal Cell Cancer which will be removed. Elda, I am positive everything will work out. Thanks again.

Hello Guys, Skin cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal skin cells. If left unchecked, these cancer cells can spread from the skin into other tissues and organs.

                      Hey Laney,
My mom was also diagnosed with breast cancer a few years ago. She was 81. They removed the very small tumor and she had radiation pellets as post-surgery treatment. She is doing great now. A good lesson to make sure you never forget to do yearly check-ups no matter the age. I know all will go well for you too.

Try to get it taken care of before it does spread. I know people who have their eye lids and nose done for cancer. It probably will be okay if it doesn't go too far.

                              Hi Diane,
Cancer is the state in which immunity of body is reduced and cells reproduce in an unrestrained fashion but it can be cured if treated properly. Drink more water than routine and add citrus fruits and vegetables containing vitamin A, C, E, beta carotene and selenium as they helps in fighting skin cancer. Add spoon of baking soda in your bathing water and avoid going under sun direct. Exercise regulalry as it will boost your immunity system.
