    Boswell on Scots
‘The Scottish language is being lost every day, and in a short time will become quite unintelligible. [...] To me, who have the true patriotic soul of an old Scotsman, that would seem a pity. It is for that reason that I have undertaken to make a dictionary of our tongue, through which one will always have the means of learning it like any other dead language.’ (Boswell in Holland, p. 161)

I found this in the Heritage area of Scotsman newspaper, online. A scholar named Susan Rennie has found draft copy of Boswell's Scottish dictionary. Hereto you will find the link to that blog:

Hope someone finds this of interest!! I recently read Johnson & Boswell's Scottish trip way back....and found it quite interesting. Joan

Thank you Joan for the link, I love words......

    I have the following books.

    The Scots Dialect Dictionary

    Chambers Scots Dictionary

Concise Scots Dictionary, along with Scots Thesaurus

Oh yes and the American Heritage Dictionary (of the English Language) !

Despite the collection, there are times when I still become lost for words !

You might be interested to know that on the Electric Scotland site on our menu we have a link to "Scots Language" which takes you to http://www.electricscotland.com/cult...cots/index.htm

On this page you can get to a glossary of Scots words that are recorded in audio. One of the tasks I will undertake at some time is to convert all the link to mp3 files as they were all recorded in Real Audio which means you need to download the file to play it.

Who was Boswell and what makes him an expert in the Scots words?

Elda, Boswell was the person who accompanied Johnson on his tour of Scotland.

The following link is a short summary of Boswell.
