  • Aly Bain & Jay Ungar, Big Scioty

Here's Aly Bain, along with the guy who did the Ashokan Farewell, playing fiddles together! Of course there's also Jerry Douglas on dobro. Hope you all like it! Joan

Re: Aly Bain & Jay Ungar, Big Scioty

Joan - Many thanks for the video which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Some years ago, I heard Ashokan Farewell for the first time being played be the Royal Marines, with violin by the conductor.

I had the feeling that I knew the tune, or had heard it played somewhere.

I made enquiries which led me to email Jay who gave me the story behind the tune.

That was the key I required.

We have an area near Falkirk, by the name of the Carron Valley, through which the Carron River flows.

Some years ago a dam was built, and the Carron Resevoir constructed.

Yes, houses were lost under the water, but not as many as at Ashokan.

It is the Carron resevoir area where in my mind I had associated the tune.

I did email Jay the story, and I still am a regular visitor to his web site.

And yes I also am a follower of Aly Bain.

Thanks again Joan for the video.
