Re: Dire Straits, 1978, Sultans of Swing....
You really have a knack for taking me back, and I do appreciate it. The first time I heard this song was a miserably cold winter night in 1978/79 when I was stationed in a remote community in northern Saskatchewan, Canada. The only a.m. radio station was in Flin Flon, Manitoba and it cut its transmitting power down in the evenings to save money. I usually left it on anyway, just in case we got a "skip" with a clear signal; otherwise it was just a faint backdrop with mostly static and white noise. Anyhow, one night through the white noise and static came hints of these marvelous guitar licks that nothing could hide completely. I was hooked and bought the album so I could hear it clearly anytime I wanted. I still have it in my collection and have been a fan of everything they did from there on. Our local Celtic band "Out of Alba" still does a fine cover of "Brothers in Arms". So fine!
