  • From the Lone Shieling....On Cape Breton Island

When I traveled with my family to Nova Scotia, in 1979, we went counter-clockwise around Cape Breton Island, camping mainly near the beaches. I loved the entire trip, & yearn to go back. I have a photo of this stone that marks their "Lone Sheiling", and I copied the following from that stone:

From the Lone Shieling of the Misty Island,
Mountains divide us, and the Waste of Seas--
Yet still the blood is Strong,
    The Heart is Highland,
    And we in dreams...
    Behold the Hebrides.

Thanks for allowing me to share this with you, both Scots, & Canadians. Joan

Re: From the Lone Shieling....On Cape Breton Island

I read this post some time ago, started to reread it this morning thinking for the first time, which wasn't so.....the poster might enjoy, or maybe already has, Alistair Macleod's, "No Great Mischief". Some time in the eighties, back when I had a wife, we visited friends, Bedford, Nova Scotia, returned with "Gooseberry Jam" and the nagging, "why only one jar" ?
