  • Modern Day Jacobites

How many of you have seen a modern day Jacobite? The definition of a Jacobite is :

    Jac·o·bite
    [jak-uh-bahyt] Show IPA
    –noun
    1.
a partisan or adherent of James II of England after his overthrow (1688), or of the Stuarts.

I have to question this because the modern day Jacobite does not recognize nor except a real Jacobite who was sold into slavery or survived the gallows after the 45.

Yes, the modern day Jacobite wears kilts, speaks Gael and loves their God.

They are self-invented just as the Scots who were sent out of Scotland for whatever reason. Yet, those who live in Scotland claim they are real!

I am going to do a story on the Modern Day Jacobite! I will make sure I thoroughly investigate this because there is supposed to be 1200+.

    Here I go again...the rebel

      A Revised Modern Jacobite

I was honoured to get to know a modern day jacobite from the use of the internet. The gentleman inspired me to do research into jacobites and jacobite organizations in Scotland. On Sunday, the 26 of December 2010, I received an email alert from Scotland on Sunday newspaper. The article was about Jacobites in Scotland. The article told me enough to get me started on an article for Electric Scotland.

First, I want to share with you the meaning of the word jacobite. It is a person who supports Jacobitism.

Jacobitism was the political movement dedicated to the restoration of the Stuart kings to the thrones of England, Scotland, and the Kingdom of Ireland. The movement took its name from the Latin form Jacobus of the name of King James II and VII.
Jacobitism was a response to the deposing of James II and VII in 1688 when he was replaced by his daughter Mary II jointly with her husband and first cousin William of Orange. The Stuarts lived on the European mainland after that, occasionally attempting to regain the throne with the aid of France and Spain. The primary seats of Jacobitism were Ireland and Scotland, particularly the Scottish Highlands. In England, Jacobitism was strongest in the north, and some support also existed in Wales.
Many embraced Jacobitism because they believed parliamentary interference with monarchical succession to be illegitimate, and many Catholics hoped the Stuarts would end discriminatory laws. Still other people of various allegiances became involved in the military campaigns for all sorts of motives. In Scotland the Jacobite cause became entangled in the last throes of the warrior clan system, and became a lasting romantic memory.
The emblem of the Jacobites is the White Rose of York. White Rose Day is celebrated on 10 June, the anniversary of the birth of the Old Pretender in 1688.

The jacobites were not only in Scotland but in the whole of the UK and the British Empire. We all know the Royal Line of Stuart is now extinct. There are only off shoots from illegitimate children from earlier Stuart Monarchs.

The EU Human Rights laws provide the opportunity for people to express themselves by practising jacobitism. There are around 1200 people world wide who do choose to live this kind of lifestyle. There are also those who do re-enactment style of jacobitism. The third group is more a flamboyant boys group who uses the jacobite era to be prestigious and earn money from their club.

The first group who live by the standard actually do wear kilts every day. They are very strong Christians and believe in Scottish Independence. They do believe the crown of the UK belongs to a rightful Stuart. This group has excepted all the close lines of the Royal Stuarts have died out. Yet, they do hope for a Stuart/Stewart to return to Scotland.

The second group is an organization I may compare closely to the Sons of Confederate Veterans. These men do re-enactments on the dates of the famous battles in 1715, 1719 and 1745. They are also interested in Scotland's Independence. To coin an old term, these men are as faithful as an old dog.

The third group, I will use Ms J K Rowling's work to describe them," Those who shall not be named." I use Ms Rowling's work because I have had the misfortune of actually dealing with this group. Those who shall not be named dress up in fine male clothing of the era and they do have certain functions pertaining to honouring the jacobite. They who shall not be named are only in the re-enactment for the money. One of their members insulted me for being an American Scot yet he is very English. The members excused his behaviour because he is very arrogant and out spoken.

My curiosity for modern jacobites was satisfied. I discovered the everyday man and woman who wears their tartan without being ashamed. The every day benevolent group who wants to bring honour to the thousands who suffered during this time frame. Lastly, I discovered, They who shall not be named and must wonder if the same ending will come upon them?
