Just one thing Alastair. I don't think we are the oldest royal democracy. I think it's Denmark. I'm sure I read it somewhere.

The article stated the "United Kingdom" ,[the breaking up of] it did not mean Scotland as an individual entity with regard being the oldest [ i must admit i read it that way first time around]

I meant the United Kingdom, Gordon. I'm pretty sure that Denmark has the oldest, continuous royal line in the world.

A quick search on Google and other sites reveals...

Japan is the oldest monarchy. Denmark would come in 4th~~~

OK, maybe I read it was the oldest European monarchy. I know I read it was the oldest something or other.
