  • Scottish independence: One million Scots urged to sign 'yes' declaration

Well the YES campaign got under way although from outside Scotland it doesn't seem to have got the headlines I'd have expected. In looking at the Scottish Sun for example I really had to hunt for an article about it.

The BBC report gives the Declaration and has a couple of videos which you can view at:

The Scotsman report is at http://www.scotsman.com/news/politic...unch-1-2318009

The Herald's report is at http://www.heraldscotland.com/news/h...hed.1337944469

The Daily Record report is at http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/2012/05...6908-23873298/

The Yes campaign web site is at http://www.yesscotland.net/

What does the Yes Declaration say?

"I believe that it is fundamentally better for us all if decisions about Scotland's future are taken by the people who care most about Scotland, that is, by the people of Scotland.

"Being independent means Scotland's future will be in Scotland's hands.

"There is no doubt that Scotland has great potential. We are blessed with talent, resources and creativity. We have the opportunity to make our nation a better place to live, for this and future generations. We can build a greener, fairer and more prosperous society that is stronger and more successful than it is today.

"I want a Scotland that speaks with her own voice and makes her own unique contribution to the world - a Scotland that stands alongside the other nations on these isles, as an independent nation."

    Alastair,

It has been published on ABC News in Australia.

    Scotland launches independence campaign
    Updated May 25, 2012 21:32:53

Scotland's first minister Alex Salmond launched an official "yes" campaign on Friday ahead of a referendum on independence from Britain that is not likely to be held until 2014.

The "Yes Scotland" campaign launch at a cinema in Edinburgh comes despite the fact that a date has not been finalised for a vote on whether to sever the more than 300-year-old political union between England and Scotland.

Mr Salmond, the leader of the Scottish National Party, wants the referendum in late 2014 and has proposed to offer a third option of increased devolution.

The British government favours a swifter in-or-out vote.

"We're gathered here today at the start of something really, really special," Mr Salmond said at the launch of the cross-party "campaign.

"I want Scotland to be independent, not because I think we are better than any other country, but because I know that we are as good as any other country.

"Our opponents, and we have a few, they're rich and they're powerful. And therefore to win, and to win well, we're going to have to galvanise the whole community of the realm of Scotland.

"We intend to take our case to the people by community activism and by online wizardry, and by the time we enter the 2014 campaign our intention is to have one million Scots have signed the 'independence for Scotland' declaration.

"And friends, if we achieve that then we shall win an indepdendent Scotland."

Seems to me that there was more publicity outside Scotland than from inside Scotland. Thanks for these extra links.

This thread expresses disappointment about the launch of the YES campaign and the publicity it generated.

Well the Scottish media has been full of it for days, before and after the event. According to members here they heard of the event at opposite ends of the earth. I’m not sure what more is required to improve on that.

Looking for any sort of insight form the Scottish Sun would be futile and it is not surprising that no inspiration can be gleaned from its pages.

I am not suggesting that this site is biased, but I’m sure reference could be made to some positive articles etc occasionally with far less effort than is currently being expended on trawling through the gutter press for negative stories to repeat and use as an argument in support of maintaining the Union.
