Finally it has all made sense to me...
Firstly Russia tried to bring peace to Afghanistan..and failed..
Now the US and a coalition of other countries are trying to bring peace to Afghanistan..and failing.
Maybe, they should change tack..Join a coalition of nations to help Afghanistan to mine it's mineral wealth for the benefit of who those resources belong to, the Afghan people.
People who are poor and downtrodden will always want to fight for whatever they perceive to belong to them. And rightly so.
I remember reading a book a while back, it was fictional, never-the-less the story was about a hugely successful business man who owned a mining company, and decided he wanted the riches in a small unstable African country. His plan was to employ a group of mercenaries to dispense with the current Dictator, and place another more sypathetic one in his place. The end result was the mining magnate was double crossed by the mercenaries...
This seems to ring true with what's happening in Afghanistan.
