Over a 100 customers, & they, the firefighters, etc., emergency personnel, had to make a makeshift walkway with a ladder, eventually put a board across it, & people were having to take their shoes & socks off, & wear a lifevest, & walk down one at a time. It was women first, as well. There was no panic, & the restaurant owner was talking to the news people via cell phone, & he was vowing to stay onboard till the last person was out. I heard that Boomer Esiessian (sp?) another ex football player, & commentator, called to the owner, & made a crack about taking people on "boat rides". I still have lakes all over my property, & of course the ground is squishy. I live in what's supposed to be a highland area!! Take care. Joan
Jane, the people who live near the Pompton and Passaic rivers were,

told to leave from their homes yesterday as the water was to deep to stay.

      Re: Earthquake in Japan

I have now found another site which brings home the devastation caused by the tsunami.

Use the slider in the center, to see the full before and after.

How can anyone come to terms with such a force of nature, and when one looks at the pictures, are you reminded of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki photos ?

BREAKING: A hydrogen explosion has been confirmed at the number 4 reactor at the Fukushimo nuclear plant in Japan's north-east, Kyodo is reporting.
        1:13 PM
BREAKING: Japan's chief cabinet secretary Yukio Edano has told a media conference the number 4 reactor at the Fukushima nuclear plant is on fire.

Mr Edano said the reactor was not in operation at the time of the earthquake and has no active fuel rods. But it does contain spent rods.

He said the rods have been heated, releasing hydrogen. He said authorities are asuming that radioactive material is also being released.

He said high radioactivity levels near the plant may be a result of the fire in reactor number 4. But he also said the fuel rods at the reactor are not on fire, the building is on fire.

Mr Edano said the figures that have been released to date measuring the level of radiation around the plant have been misquoted as micro sieverts. He said the unit attached to the figures should have been milli sieverts which are 1,000 times stronger and much more damaging to human health.

He confirmed that the containment vessel around reactor 2 may have been damaged. But he said he believes this reactor has not contributed greatly to the rise in levels of radioactivity.

He said efforts to cool the fuel rods in reactors 1, 2 and 3 are ongoing, but authorities are worried about how this will be maintained.
        1:05 PM
Japan PM's Naoto Kan has addressed the media.

He has explained mandatory evacuations have taken place in the region around the Fukushima nuclear plant.

Mr Kan advised people living within a 30km radius of the plant to stay indoors.

          Re: Earthquake in Japan

There was a news report this morning regarding an American comedian who does voiceovers for insurance commercials who was tweating jokes at the expense of the Japanese. This will have to go down to "what was he thinking"?
