  • Otoe Pow Wow, south of Ponca City, Ok.

Here are some great shots of the Otoe Pow-wow this year, 2010. Rolf Clements did a nice job on his action shots.

      Ranaid,
Thank you for your reply to the Pow-wow pictures.

Thing is, I've watched this young man, Rolf Clements, begin his work with photography here. At first he mingled with our
Ponca tribe and was there continually, quietly observing, and photographing. The next thing I knew he was working for our
Ponca City News paper. I'm proud of his continually polishing his work and, I wanted to share that with anyone who would enjoy. Of course, color makes the difference.

The Ponca pow-wow comes up the last of August and Standing Bear at the end of September. None of the family seems to want to do the Ponca pow-wow. Generations of Mother's family always claimed the same spot, year after year.
Sister set up an awning and a table there and people commented how sad it was not to see "Gramma" my mother there.

We've had inquiries about the Standing Bear pow-wow, family who want to bring their children, so I suppose we will have to do that. I guess I'm not a very good Indian, and it is told, "It is hard to be Indian." Everyone else goes forth, regardless. Mother told us the old way was four years of mourning, and I'm beginning to understand.

Once tradition dictated that all activities, dances, games, politicing etc. was to stop for a period of time. Now, during the four days of mourning they stop, but go right on after that.
