  • Stewarts in America 1836, back to Scotland! help?

I am writing & in walks Captain William Drummond Stewart of Grandtully into my research (see Across the Wide Missouri pub. 1947) into the area where MY Scottish ancestors settled.(first St. Louis and then West) My Scottish did not wander around - it was into New Orleans and up the River to West of the Missouri River. In order to tell the life story of my grandfather I must include the history that brought the Scots to America - this ties in as I had the question mark- why that spot? This man listed at the top- went back to Scotland and....what? spoke to his Clan members? or gave a speech in the mid 1840s? help me out here to narrow this, please ! Any help greatly appreciated- point me to a book? Now I'm swamped under Stewart History wading my way

You might like to do search for New Orleans through the toolbar at the foot of this page. There are a lot of references to the city on the site. I also believe that it was a Scot that laid out the city plan and made a point of situating it above the flood plain.

I am so sorry, all the Stewart's I have recorded are pre War of 1812. The 1830 and 1840 census records of the area maybe able to help you answer one or two questions. I hope this helps? All of our Stewart's were Virginia and Maryland.

          http://www.cemeteries-of-tx.com/Texas.htm

Ranald, I read the historical accounting of William...I do believe he was among the group of discoverers of the far NW Territories ie, Lewis and Clark, etc... He returned to Scotland when his brother died, however, I trace back on Mr. Nichols, I believe he may have been one of the Original 300 to Texas Republic. I find him a few leads in cemeteries in San Antonio, but I will have to seek further to determine which Francis is the correct one...He died 1915 ca...so he could have been the age to be in the Texas Republic and the Confederate side of the War Between the States....Could have Mr. Stewart be a part of the Hudson Bay Company or possibly been a cattle rancher ?
