Yes Hugh, in #1..... looks like an ear at the right hand side. It is the same shape as in #12.

In #1 we have "pa" in "ter" and the clue said a person. So we are looking for a painter who is minus an ear, hence Van Gogh. And in #12 we have "IN" one "EAR" and an arrow out the other ear. Some of these may not be exact replicas but suggest the answer, while some may be pretty exact.
