  • Family History Resources in Australia & NZ

I thought this may be helpful for anyone researching their family tree and who have ancestors who migrated to Australia and New Zealand.

The New south Wales Registry of Births/Death/Marriages.

    http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/

    Family History

The Registry holds over 18 million records of events registered in NSW. These records include:

Early Church Records (baptismal, marriages and burials) from 1788 to 1855.
    early Church Codes
Birth, death and marriage registrations from 1856 to the present day.
The Registry produces certificates from these records.

Because the Registry collects sensitive and private data about you and your family, and with the rise in Identity Fraud within Australia, the Registry has stringent entitlement and identification policies in place. For these reasons, certificates are categorised as 'restricted' or 'unrestricted'.

Restricted records are normally only available to the person named on the certificate and identification is always required.

Unrestricted records are available to anyone. No Identification is required. We refer to these unrestricted records as Family History.

Family History Certificates are unrestricted and are available to anyone, if the event occurred:

Births - 100 years ago or more
Deaths - 30 years ago or more
Marriages - 50 years ago or more

To assist customers with family history research, the Registry provides free access to unrestricted birth, death and marriage family history indexes. The published information on this website is referred to as the Online Historical Indexes.

As the Historical Indexes contain limited information, you can purchase a full birth, death or marriage Family History Certificate online which provides more information than the Historical Index results.

It is FREE to search, you only have to pay to receive documentation, lists of names and dates may be printed free.

            Hi Euan

Great Australian New Zealand family history research spots to find more. Another great spot is NZETC University of Victoria

            http://www.nzetc.org/tm/scholarly/subject-000001.html

Amongst a number of books put up are

The Cyclopedia of New Zealand [Nelson, Marlborough & Westland Provincial Districts] by Cyclopedia Company Limited

The Cyclopedia of New Zealand [Canterbury Provincial District] by Cyclopedia Company Limited

The Cyclopedia of New Zealand [Wellington Provincial District] by Cyclopedia Company Limited

The Cyclopedia of New Zealand [Otago & Southland Provincial Districts] by Cyclopedia Company Limited

The Cyclopedia of New Zealand [Auckland Provincial District] by Cyclopedia Company Limited

The Cyclopedia of New Zealand [Taranaki, Hawke’s Bay & Wellington Provincial Districts] by Cyclopedia Company Limited

In these is a wealth of stuff about the people and places and it may just be that those looking for early forebears who came to New Zealand will find some answers here.

Also NZETC have Brett White Wings Vol 1 and 2 online which is about those early sailing ships and their voyages bringing early immigrants to NZ

Here is another site in Australia to assist you in your research.......

              "Trove" National Library of Australia.

              About Trove
Trove is a new discovery experience focused on Australia and Australians. It supplements what search engines provide. If you are researching in the fields of the social sciences, literature, local or family history, or need inspiration for your school assignment, then this is the tool for you.

For example if researching images relating to Edmund Barton, our first Prime Minister, results will include descriptions such as people, book, manuscript, map and newspaper articles. A researcher searching for information on Nellie Melba will be presented with a range of results including biographies, pictures, music, newspapers, books etc.

The service works best in Internet Explorer 7+, Firefox 3+ or Safari 4+, at a screen resolution of 1024×768 or higher.

              http://trove.nla.gov.au/general/about

              and home........ http://trove.nla.gov.au/

use either link to explore this resource.

Here is an original announcement of the second marriage of my Gt,Gt, Grandmother taken from South Australian Register Friday 18 April 1856
